Library Information - "overdue loan" and "reservation availability" email notification services

UWIC Library Division will now notify students of overdue materials by sending an email to your UWIC email account. This email will be generated once material is 3-days overdue. Subsequent overdue notices will be posted to a term time address. So please check your UWIC email regularly, and also let the Library know if you move house.

The Library Division has also recently started notifying students when items that they have reserved are waiting for collection at one of the campus libraries. Again, this notification is sent to the appropriate UWIC email account.

STUDENT DESK TOP NOTES

Module(s) Choices 04-05 - Amendments/Additions only Form

(This is NOT intended for students at Cyncoed who will continue with their present system.)

At certain times of the year e.g. within a short period at the beginning of the Academic Year, or at the end of Semester 1 you may wish (or may be asked) to re-consider your initial module choices with your Tutor(s).   The discussions might result in changes to your previous choice **.

It should be noted that, due mainly to Academic reasons, there are usually deadlines for the submission of changes – your Tutor will be able to advise on such deadlines.

Should a change in module(s) choice be agreed then a copy of the relevant FORM containing instructions/help can be found, for both UWIC and Franchised College(s) Students, for printing by clicking on the following address:

http://www.uwic.ac.uk/uwicnet/student/module-amend-form.doc

The form is also available from your Tutor(s) (UWIC and Franchised Students)
or

your School’s Administrative Office (UWIC Students only).

It is of the utmost importance that any changes in your choice are reported to UWIC, Academic Registry,  MIS Unit, Llandaff via your Tutor(s).
(Franchised Students via your Tutor to UWIC Franchised/Collaborative Provision Office, Llandaff)

This will ensure that you are entered for the correct examinations at the end of the year and that you will collect the correct credits towards your qualification.

Ken Evans,  MIS Unit, Academic Registry, Llandaff

**  If you receive a transcript at the end of semester 1 for this academic year (03-04) and you wish to change your choices then rather than using this form the amended transcript may be returned via your tutor.  See notes on the back of the transcript.

Re-enabling your Expired Password from outside UWIC

ISD has recently developed a facility to allow students and staff to manage expired passwords from outside of UWIC e.g. the Internet. This is in response to problems experience when passwords expire out of office hours, or during holiday periods. There are 2 steps to achieving this:

1. If you need to access UWIC e-mail or Blackboard from home and your password expires you can now go to: http://www.uwic.ac.uk/pmWeb/enablepassword.asp  to re-enable your password. Please note: once you have completed this stage of the process it may take up to 15 minutes before your account is re-enabled. If your log in fails after completing this stage, wait 5-10 minutes and try again.

2. The re-enabled password will be valid for 24 hours. During this period you should log on to: https://email1.uwic.ac.uk/iisadmpwd/ to change your password. This new password will be valid for 60 days. Please note that if you re-enable your account and do not change your password within 24 hours, you will be locked out again, and will not be able to repeat this process a second time, so you must perform step 2.
If you have forgot your password you will need to contact ISDHelpdesk on 0292 0416220

Are you interested in becoming a Student Tutor?

UWIC, together with Careers Wales,  is currently re-launching it's Student Tutoring Scheme and we are looking for enthusiastic and capable students to go into primary and secondary schools on a voluntary basis to help pupils with their work.

The typical commitment for a Student Tutor would be a morning or afternoon session once a week over a six week period. Student Tutors will work under the direction of teachers, helping pupils of all ages and capabilities.

All our schools are local and travelling expenses will be covered for you.

Working as a Student Tutor brings many benefits for yourself, the pupils and the school.

It can lead to enhancing your CV, providing insight into and experience of the teaching profession and the satisfaction of helping children learn, amongst many other benefits.

If you are interested in becoming a Student Tutor, please contact Jamie McIndo in the UWIC Student's Union on 20416496 or  jmcindo@uwic.ac.uk  for further information and an application form.

*Please note that if the demand for places does exceed the places available, places will in the first instance, be allocated on a "first come, first served basis". We will, however, be running several Student Tutoring Schemes throughout the academic year and your name will then be submitted for the next set of dates.

Careers Disability Newsletter

The Careers Service have developed a newsletter for disabled and dyslexic students. The newsletter contains interesting articles on disability issues, success stories from previous students and information on companies who are offering specific schemes to disabled and dyslexic students and graduates, or who proactively support an equal opportunities agenda. The newsletter will be issued each term.

If you would like to receive the newsletter, please email Helena Coates at : hcoates@uwic.ac.uk, and she will add you to a mailing list to receive the document. Or call her on: 029 20 416333 for further details. Helena will also update you, as necessary, on any urgent information or events

Recycling old mobile phones

I travel regularly to West Africa, where a mobile phone isn't a fashion item.

Out there, telephone landlines and mains electricity are rare.

But if you have a mobile you can set up a small business - and feed your family.

A mobile is better than a handout - it can give someone a chance to change their life.

To make a real difference to someone's life, take 3 easy steps:

1 Remove your sim card
2 Put your old mobile with its charger in a bag or envelope
3 Hand it in at Cyncoed reception for Cathy Grove.

Thanks - and have a good Christmas!

Meningitis Warning

You may have heard that a student at UWIC’s Cyncoed Campus has been admitted to hospital with suspected meningococcal disease (meningitis). This email is to reassure you that most cases of meningitis are isolated cases and do not pose a risk to other students or to staff. However, this may be a good time to familiarise yourself with the symptoms of the disease, which are:

· Severe headache
· Feeling unwell (which can feel like a very bad hangover)
· High temperature
· Vomiting/diarrhoea
· Aching limbs and joints, particularly a stiff neck
· Sensitivity to light
· Drowsiness and confusion
· Rash of tiny red spots, which do not disappear when pressed

BUT not all these symptoms appear at the same time.

Look out for your friends and fellow students and, if you feel unwell or are worried about a friend, let someone know - either a Nursing Officer, halls warden, member of staff or friend.
UWIC is in very close contact with the National Public Health Service for Wales and they have issued a letter http://www.uwic.ac.uk/uwicnet/staff/Documents/NPHS_letter_meningitis.doc , which provides more information for students, together with some useful contact numbers. If you want more information, see the following websites:

Meningitis Trust http://www.meningitis-trust.org

Accessing UWICnet from outside of UWIC

UWIC’s intranet – “UWICnet” has recently been password protected to prevent unauthorised access. These changes should not be noticeable when logged on to a UWIC PC using Internet Explorer. However if you wish to access UWICnet from outside of UWIC (or if you use a different web browser) you will now need to enter a username and password.

The username is your normal UWIC username that you use to access the UWIC network (“ST” and then your student number), but it must be preceded by “CAMPUS\”. For example if your username is ST12345678 you must enter CAMPUS\ST12345678 in the username field. The password is the same password that you enter when logging on.

NB: Your username for logging onto the network and for other systems (e.g. Blackboard, Email) will remain the same, it is only UWICnet that is effected.
