During this unit, you will be build on the introduction to stigma, and deviance to look at people deal with stigma and how the health care professional can help. 

Specifically, at the end of this unit you will be able to:

• Define the terms discredited, discreditable;
• Explore the concepts of passing, normalisation and disassociation;
• Explore ways of reducing stigma;
• Be aware of how the concepts may affect professional practice.

In order to complete this unit, you should have the following:

• Your brain!
• A general, introductory, sociology text book (e.g. Scambler, 2003 or Armstong, 2003).
