This unit aims to present a basic overview of pain, focusing on (not surprisingly) the psychological aspects. By the end of this unit you should be able to:

• Evaluate the older models of pain;
• Evaluate the gate control theory of pain;
• Describe some of the factors that influence pain.

In order to complete this unit you will need:

• Your brain!
• An introductory psychology text-book such as Ogden (2004) or Marks et al (2005). 
• For a more advanced text you should use Horn and Munafo (1997)
