Criminal Records Bureau Procedures
UWIC offers a number of courses that involve work with children or
vulnerable adults, which legally require applicants to inform us of any
criminal convictions, including those that are spent e.g. no longer apply.
Applicants who receive offers for these courses and intend to take up the
place are therefore required to undertake an enhanced disclosure check
Information in relation to the procedures that need to be undertaken along
with an application form are sent to applicants who require these checks with
offers.
The CRB was conceived under Part V of the Police Act of 1997 largely in
response to public concern about the safety of children and vulnerable adults.
“We all have a responsibility to ensure that we build a safe, just and
tolerant society. A vital part of this is to ensure that we protect children
and other vulnerable people. The role of the Criminal Records Bureau is to
reduce the risk of abuse by ensuring that those who are unsuitable are not
able to work with children and vulnerable adults.”
David Blunkett, Home Secretary

The CRB provides wider access to criminal record information through its
Disclosure Service. It enables organisations in the public, private and
voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying
candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially that involving
children or vulnerable adults.

Criminal Convictions
For Health Sciences Students:
Please note even though applicants with a criminal conviction may be given a place on a course
this does not mean that students will be allowed on placements or have registration with the
Health Professions Council.
For those programmes where successful completion requires registration with the Health Profession students will need to apply to the body and at this point the case is reviewed and a decision made in relation to acceptance onto the register.
For Education Students:
Applicants with a criminal conviction may be given a place on an ITET programme, however on completion
of their programme they will subsequently need to register with the General Teaching Council.
The Council will make its own decision regarding suitability for registration
Likewise employers will also consider any disclosure on an applicant's CRB Enhanced Disclosure in line with their own policies when appointing staff.
