The
effective pedagogic use of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs)
VLEs can support learning through formative assessment,
collaboration & interaction, flexibility and widening access.
UWIC favours a three stage model, based on the work of Professor
Gilly Salmon in E-Learning and Learning Technologies:
Stage 1 – Transmission
At the transmission stage, learners visit their account,
download or print the relevant material, and log off;
Stage 2 - Transaction
At the transaction stage there is greater interaction between
the Learner and the VLE. The VLE can track a learner’s activity, giving the tutor opportunity to structure and
monitor progress. An example would be allowing the
release of new material once documents can been
reviewed. Formative assessment is also included in this stage,
providing the learner with an opportunity to assess their own
understanding and progress, as well as to
receive timely feedback.
Stage 3 –Transformation
The highest level of activity within a VLE is where it is
used as a tool to help the student take greater control of their
learning. Example features of UWIC's VLE, Blackboard, that
enable students to become active learners include wikis,
blogs and discussion boards which promote collaboration with
their colleagues and encourage reflective learning.
If you would like more advice about the use of technology to
support student learning please contact the Learning Development
Team.
General workshops are offered on a monthly basis and the team
can also deliver workshops specific to
needs within your School.
