MSc/PgD Sports and Exercise Nutrition

Course Length:
One year full time or two years part time plus dissertation component.

Attendance is usually one day (or two half days) per week (part time) or two days per week (full time) plus dissertation time for the award of MSc.

Entry requirements:
Applicants should have one of the following:

  • A relevant initial degree in Human Nutrition (and/or dietetics) OR Sports Science. The initial degree should contain both physiology and biochemistry modules. Further background information will be given to those candidates whose first degree does not contain either physiology or biochemistry.
  • A professional qualification deemed to be of a satisfactory standard for the purpose of postgraduate admission plus two years of relevant post qualification experience.
Career Potential:
This programme aims to allow participants to have the appropriate qualifications to register on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr). This register is designed to accredit suitably qualified and experienced nutritionists who have the competency to work autonomously with performance oriented athletes, as well as those participating in physical activity, sport and exercise for health. Sports and exercise nutritionists apply their knowledge to promote self, sound and effective practice in Sports and Exercise nutrition in a practical way.

  • Nutrition (for those graduates without a nutrition based initial degree)
  • Sports and Exercise Nutrition
  • Research Methods
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Professional Practice
  • Research Project
  • Option modules for students with a nutrition/dietetics first degree: psychology in health, public health and behaviour and motivational change.
Assessment:
A mixture of coursework, case studies and written examination.

Selection Procedure:
Selection is initially by way of an application form, although applicants may be interviewed.
